Description

“Spring moment” is a narrow vertical panel of a flowering meadow: pink poppies and cosmos rise on slender stems from the dark earth towards a pale sky.

What the picture shows

The flowers are arranged in several planes. In front are large open cups in saturated crimson, coral pink and soft rose, each with a centre worked in dark beads ringed with yellow and white specks. Behind them are smaller buds, daisies and cornflowers in blue, lilac and yellow, with green stems and fine tendrils running between them, some hanging down as strands of beads. The background changes from bottom to top: almost black-violet near the ground, it lightens to lilac and then to a warm cream at the top, as though the sun were rising behind the meadow. That background stays as print on the artist canvas while the flowers, buds and stems are stitched — which is what gives the meadow its depth and keeps the air between the blooms. Some of the flowers are cut off by the edge of the canvas, so the meadow seems to continue beyond the picture.
