Description

“Magical wonder bird” is a peacock in blue and violet on a black background. A cool shimmer runs through the whole piece: the plumage, the crest and the tail are built up as though the bird were covered in jewels.

What the picture shows

The peacock's head and neck are worked in saturated blue beads with turquoise transitions, the eye ringed in white and orange, the beak pale. The crest stands up like a fan and is made of separate beads on fine stalks. The breast and back are scaled with pale blue and silver rounds, each laid out in a circle. The long tail falls away in eyes, every one of them edged in green, pink and violet around a dark centre. Top left, blue bubbles and thin rays are scattered across the canvas; bottom right there is a large terracotta flower with lilac petals. The black background stays as print on the artist canvas, and it is this contrast that makes the stitched plumage glow, while the small glittering elements catch the light from different angles.
