Description

“The dream of a journey to the east” gathers blossoming cherry trees, an arched bridge and the tiled roofs of pagodas in the morning mist. It is a quiet, contemplative scene where the pink of the blossom is set against the grey graphic lines of an old town.

What the picture shows

The top of the canvas is filled with cherry branches: the blossom is worked in dense clusters of beads running from pale pearl to saturated crimson and fuchsia. Through them appear pagoda roofs with turquoise tiles, and below, a wooden arched bridge with carved railings crosses the water. A warm orange window glows in the house on the right — the only genuinely warm spot in a cool background. Far off, in whitish mist, a second pavilion and a small flock of birds are barely visible. Down by the water there are stone steps, green shrubs and drifts of tiny flowers that continue along the banks. Beads cover the blossom, the roofs, the bridge and the reflections on the water, while the mist, the sky and the stone wall stay as print, which is what makes the depth read instantly.
