Description

“Black raven” shows a large bird perched on a branch against an enormous golden moon, with red berries burning all around it. The mood is solemn and slightly mysterious, like an autumn folk tale.

What the picture shows

The raven fills almost the whole canvas, and its black plumage is far from flat: violet, bluish and steel highlights run through it, while the long wing and tail feathers are laid in row after row, so the wing reads as a set of separate plates. The beak is heavy and the eye a dark amber with a white glint. Behind the bird glows a yellow-orange disc of the moon with soft washes of colour, and the surrounding background is a deep grey-green. Clusters of red berries and turquoise leaves are scattered around the edges, and small white star-sparks flicker in the sky. The beadwork covers the bird, the berries, the leaves and the moonlight; the thin twigs and the blurred background stay as print on the artist canvas, so the stitched areas stand out in relief.
