Description

“Blooming in the dark” is a large dahlia in close-up on a black ground where the outlines of other flowers barely show.

What the picture shows

The flower fills almost the whole canvas. Its petals are worked in fine pale strokes — pink, pearl and gold — over a dark base, and every row is outlined in bright blue beads, so the bloom glows along its contours. The heart stays dark and dense, with the petals opening out from it in a circle. Behind rise large pointed petals in warm gold and bronze, laid in long lines and giving the strongest shine. The background is nearly black, with silhouettes of other flowers drawn black on black and left as print on the canvas. Beadwork covers only the main flower, so the contrast is built on light rather than on colour. The flower sits a little left of centre, leaving a dark field on the right where only outlines are visible.
