Description

“Majestic wisdom” is an Indian elephant in festival dress, covered in ornament from trunk to feet, on a dark grey ground.

What the picture shows

The elephant walks to the left, trunk curled, tusks pale. Its whole body is patterned: a large red rosette and a border of small flowers on the caparison, a jewelled headpiece on the brow, bracelets of even bead rows on the legs. The palette rests on green, from deep emerald to light pistachio, with red, gold and pearl accents. Flowering branches wind around the animal — pink rosettes above and below, small red and blue blossoms, green shoots and tendrils. The background stays as bare canvas, so the whole ornament reads almost like an embroidered blanket thrown over the dark. The elephant is shown in profile and fills almost the whole canvas, while the flowering branches below form something like a carpet under its feet.
