Description

“A colorful flap of a wing” shows a hummingbird in flight, wings spread, against a pale ground with flowers and small gold stars.

What the picture shows

The bird turns sideways with its long black beak reaching forward and both wings raised. Back and wings run from bright blue through turquoise to dark grey, the breast and throat are red, terracotta and orange, and the tail is almost black with a blue sheen. Peach and coral leaf-petals unfold behind it, with white and lilac bellflowers below. The background is pale at the top and blue-turquoise at the bottom, sprinkled with fine gold stars and droplets. Flowers and background stay as print on the canvas while the beads cover the bird and a few accents, so the hummingbird stands clearly out of its soft watercolour setting. The wings are raised at different angles rather than symmetrically, so there is real movement in the bird: it seems to hover for a moment before flying on.
