Main Bead Embroidery Kit Calavera
Description
“Calavera” is a painted skull in flowers — the image Mexico celebrates the Day of the Dead with. The mood is festive rather than eerie.
What the picture shows
The skull is filled with pale blue and cream beads and carries its own painting: red-orange rings around the eye sockets, a pattern on the forehead, small scrolls on the jaw and an even row of white teeth. The sockets stay dark, the deepest point of the whole piece. A dense wreath gathers around the skull: large orange hibiscus flowers, a white and yellow chrysanthemum on the crown of the head, roses, blue and turquoise blooms, pink clusters, feathers and a few butterflies. The palette rests on warm orange against cool turquoise. The grey background is left unbeaded, so wreath and skull come forward. The flowers crowd the skull from every side and run past the upper edge, so the composition feels larger than the canvas itself. A few small butterflies are scattered into the corners.
