Description

“Thorny luxury” is a thistle in full bloom: one large flower and two smaller heads against a cool, pale haze.

What the picture shows

The main flower opens into a tousled brush of fine petals, from lilac and violet to almost pink, with darker veins. Below it sits a large green head filled in even rows of round beads, so the scales stay clearly readable. Two more heads, smaller and tighter, are carried on firm stems to the left and right. The leaves are deeply cut and spiked, laid in several greens from fresh grass to deep emerald. The pale greyish lilac background keeps the faint outlines of other thistles and stays as print on the canvas, so the beadwork carries the plant alone. The stem runs the full height of the canvas from bottom to top with the leaves thrown out to either side, so the composition stays balanced despite the tousled look of the flower itself.
