Description

“Sage gaze” is an elephant's head covered in ornament and jewellery, in blue and silver on a dark ground.

What the picture shows

The eyes hold the picture: pale blue, calm, with clear folds of skin around them. Forehead and ears are covered with a lace-like pattern of scrolls, drops and diamonds worked in silver, copper and blue beads. Even crosswise rows run the length of the trunk, which makes it look heavy and three-dimensional. Two large tusks are filled with pearl and steel beads and carry copper rings. Long chains with drop-shaped pendants hang from the ears and the harness. The dark grey canvas is left unbeaded, so all this jeweller's work reads like silver on dark velvet. The head is shown front on and fills the whole height of the canvas: the ears touch the upper corners and the tusks drop almost to the bottom edge. The elephant therefore looks straight at the viewer, and the picture keeps that contact from anywhere in the room.
