Description

“Captive of the night” brings a crescent moon with a woman's face and a sun with a face of its own into a single circle, framed by a wreath of leaves.

What the picture shows

On the left is the young moon in warm copper and amber: closed eyes, a calm profile, hair covered with an ornament of rosettes, spirals and small stars. On the right, inside the circle, is the sun with a silver-grey face and wavy rays that interlace with the crescent. Between them lie planets, comets, stars and concentric rings worked in gold, copper and steel beads. A wreath of leaves closes the circle — some leaves copper, others blue, edged with fine bugle beads. The dark grey background stays as print on the canvas, so all this astronomy glows on it like an engraving on metal. Moon and sun look in different directions, but their rays meet at the centre of the circle, and that is what the subject rests on.
