Description

“Luxurious sapphire” is a decorative butterfly in blue and gold, set into a symmetrical ornament on dark grey canvas.

What the picture shows

The wings run from deep sapphire through sky blue to silver and pearl, with pale patches scattered over them like scales. Body and antennae are golden copper with a small stone at the centre. Around the butterfly unfolds an ornament in the manner of a jewelled brooch: scrolls, spirals, an openwork crown above the wings and a heavier openwork pendant below, with a blue drop hanging from it. Amber and clear stones are scattered into the corners. The background is left uncovered — the dark grey canvas stays as it is, and it is against that ground that the blue and silver look most like real jewellery. The composition is strictly symmetrical, the left half repeating the right, so any slip in the beading shows. Small blue flowers beside the wings close the ornament and keep it from falling apart.
