Description

“Star maiden” is a woman's profile with loose golden hair that fills half the canvas and a pale star held in her cupped hands.

What the picture shows

The composition is split on the diagonal: warm gold light at the upper right, blue night with a scatter of small white stars at the lower left. The hair is built from long rays of seed beads and bugle beads that spread out from her head in every direction and turn into curls along the edge. The dress is filled with blue beads in several shades, from deep ink to pale sky, and towards the hem it breaks into single beads, as if dissolving into the sky. In her hands is a pale star-shaped flower with a clear stone at its centre. The background is not covered solidly: it stays as print, and the beads carry the figure, the hair and the stars. The hair fills the upper right corner completely and flows into the background, so there is almost no border between the figure and the golden sky.
