Description

“When winter blows cold” is a fairy-tale house under snow at the edge of a forest, with warm light in its windows.

What the picture shows

Roof, porch and chimney carry thick caps of snow worked in white and pale blue beads — the snow is the most raised part of the whole picture. Walls and shingles are filled in small rows of brown, ochre and grey, so every board stays visible. Green garlands with red berries and white blossoms wind above the door and under the eaves. Three windows glow warm yellow, snowy steps lead up to the door, and drifts lie along the path. Behind rises a bluish lilac forest with bare trees in haze, all of it left as print on the canvas; the beadwork carries the house, the snow and the nearest bushes. The house stands at a slight angle, so both the front with its porch and the side wall are visible, which makes it look real rather than drawn flat on.
