Description

“Summer night” shows a fairy with wide wings sitting in a dark forest and holding a lit lantern in her hands — the mood of a warm night when fireflies are already out in the grass.

What the picture shows

The figure is lit from within: an orange-gold dress that dissolves into a glow spreading across the deep green ground. Wings and long hair are beaded in pink, lilac and violet with gold veins, and long stitches run along the wing edges to mark every feather. In her hands is an openwork lantern with a tiny figure visible inside. Grass is drawn at the bottom in fine pale lines, and round points of light like pollen or fireflies are scattered over the whole background. Tree trunks and the dense dark of the forest stay as print on the canvas — beads work only where there is light. The orange glow around the figure is the warmest patch in the picture and at the same time the only source of light in the whole scene.
