Description

“Red pomegranates” is a dense wreath of pomegranates, pink blossom and small berries against dark boards.

What the picture shows

Whole fruit alternates round the circle with split halves that show ruby seeds worked in fine red beads — that is where the picture gets its sparkle. Between the pomegranates lie pink and white apple blossoms, ochre and burgundy berries on thin twigs, and pointed dark green leaves. The palette rests on red and pink, from deep garnet to pale rose and almost white. The centre of the wreath stays empty: bare dark timber with its grain showing, as in the corners of the piece. The background is not beaded, so the wreath reads as a separate three-dimensional object laid on a dark plank table. The wreath is not perfectly round: it widens slightly at the top and bottom, and twigs of berries break out past its edge to disturb the regular circle.
