Description

“Gentle roses” is a small bunch of garden roses on a soft pastel ground — the mood of a cool morning, with the flowers just cut.

What the picture shows

The bunch holds three open blooms — cream white, pale pink and buttery ivory — with two tight buds on thin stems at the top and at the lower left. The petals shift in small steps from white through pink to warm peach, so every flower reads as many layers deep. Leaves and sepals are laid in several greens, and the stems gather into a thin bundle that hangs down. The background — a blur of mint, pale blue, pink and lilac — stays as print on the canvas; beads cover only the flowers, leaves and stems, which is why the bunch separates softly from the ground with no hard outline. The flowers gather into a tight triangle in the upper half of the canvas while the lower half is given over to thin stems and empty ground, which is what makes the bunch look light. A deep pink bud at the lower left adds the one accent that an all-pastel picture would otherwise lack.
