Description

“Blooming lotus” shows two open lotus flowers and a tight bud above dark water — a calm, almost meditative subject.

What the picture shows

The petals run from near white and pearl at the edges to crimson and lilac deep inside the flower, with a dark violet shadow in the heart of the lower bloom. The upper flower opens sideways, the lower one turns towards the viewer, and a green bud with a pink tip sits on a short stem to the left. Stems and long leaf blades are laid in thin lines of green beads that fan out to the right. The background — dark water with pale and ochre reflections — stays as print on the canvas, so the beadwork carries only the flowers and stems, and the pink glows all the more against the dark. To the right of the flowers curved shoots with small leaves reach upwards and carry the eye beyond the edge of the picture. The composition is built on a diagonal, from the bud at the lower left to the upper flower on the right, and it is that diagonal that balances the dark water.
