Description

“Star angel” is a pale angel gliding over a sleeping city and scattering golden stars above its rooftops — a quiet winter fairy tale on the eve of a holiday.

What the picture shows

Two thirds of the picture is dark grey night sky sown with gold and white stars, some as fine as dust, others gathered into clusters near the top edge. The angel's long dress is worked in white, pearl and gold beads, the wings are half transparent, and hem and hair trail behind in a long train. Below lies the panorama of the sleeping town: narrow houses with steep roofs, a domed cathedral in the middle, snow on every ledge and a row of warm yellow windows. Snow and windows are beaded in white, pale blue and amber while the walls stay as print on the canvas, so the town looks lit from inside and the sky above it stays deep. To the left and right of the angel the golden stars gather into two broad clouds that balance the composition and lead the eye down from the sky to the rooftops.
