Description

“White peonies” shows three large cream-white peonies with pink hearts on a soft grey-blue ground. The mood is restrained and light: the flowers look sun-bleached, without a single sharp colour.

What the picture shows

Two open blooms sit one above the other at the centre of the canvas, a third is still taking shape on the right, and a large bud leans on a curved stem below. The petals are packed tightly and run from white and cream at the edges to pink and raspberry deep inside, so each flower looks round and heavy. Leaves and pointed green buds are laid in several greens, from dark to pale lime, and a few thin stems trail downwards in long lines. The ground — a smooth shift from cool grey-blue at the top to warm beige near the lower edge — stays as print on the canvas. Beadwork covers the flowers, buds and leaves solidly, so the bouquet steps forward and carries the whole composition.
