Description

“Charming couple” shows two gnomes in tall caps standing inside a wreath of fresh greenery, with a bouquet of pink peonies below them. The mood is springlike and homely rather than wintry.

What the picture shows

The wreath is woven from branches with long grey-green leaves close to eucalyptus; small yellow bells hang from the top on thin threads. Inside stand the two gnomes: the left one in a turquoise cap with horizontal stripes, the right one in pink covered with fine pale dots, and a pearl sits at the tip of each cap. The long beards are worked in white and silvery beads in separate strands, so they look soft. A bouquet anchors the composition below: large cream and pink peonies, small blossoms and fern. The ground — a warm cream base with a faint texture — stays as print on the canvas, while beadwork covers the wreath, the gnomes and the flowers, and the pale background is exactly what makes the relief of the stitching visible.
