Description

“Flower carps” shows two koi inside a round sphere of water, with a branch of pink sakura above them against a golden disc. The mood of an Eastern print: stillness, water and spring blossom in a single frame.

What the picture shows

The sphere of water fills the lower half of the canvas and is framed by wide golden arcs worked in fine glinting beads. Two fish swim inside: their bodies white and pearly with large red-orange and black markings, the long fins and tails laid in clear and silvery beads so they read as almost weightless. The water in the sphere is turquoise with white foam and small bubbles. Above, a sakura branch carrying dozens of pink blossoms crosses a yellow disc that reads as a sun or a moon; smaller buds reach down and touch the sphere. The ground — a soft turquoise wash with white streaks — stays as print on the canvas, while beadwork covers the fish, the water, the blossoms and the golden hoops.
