Description

“Rabbits in love” shows two golden rabbits sitting side by side on a snowy hill, with a cloud of colourful hearts rising above them. The mood is warm and a little fairy-tale, despite the severe dark ground.

What the picture shows

The background is deep graphite grey, and the pale beadwork reads especially clearly against it. The rabbits are small, worked in gold and bronze beads, leaning shoulder to shoulder and looking straight at the viewer. Beneath them runs a wavy band of snow covered with a silvery white pattern of spirals, rings and curls — a decorative story of its own, close to lacework. Above, the hearts scatter in a wide fan: turquoise, raspberry, mint, pink and gold, each with its own inner ornament of dots and circles. Small outlined hearts fill the spaces between the large ones, and a trail of dots runs upwards from the rabbits, linking the pair to the cloud of hearts and holding the composition together vertically. The higher it goes, the wider the stream spreads. The grey ground stays as print on the canvas, while beadwork covers the rabbits, the snow band and every heart.
