Description

“Summer morning” is a bouquet of meadow flowers inside a large pale circle, with a drawing of hills and fields showing behind it. The mood is a fine morning out of town, still cool while the sun is already high.

What the picture shows

The circle is outlined with a double band of golden beads and sits almost at the centre of the canvas. Inside gathers the bouquet: three large red poppies with black hearts, white daisies with yellow centres, purple globe blooms below, wheat ears and small green leaves. The topmost poppy rises on a long stem and crosses the upper edge of the circle, so the composition never closes in on itself. Behind the flowers, inside the circle, a watercolour landscape stays as print: hills, yellow strips of field, trees and a pale sky with birds. The ground around the circle is a green and blue landscape, also printed. Beadwork covers only the flowers, wheat, leaves and the rim of the circle, which is why the bouquet steps forward as a living patch against the airy background.
