Description

“Birds in love” shows two golden birds on a silver branch, with colourful hearts hanging below them on long threads. The mood is warm and slightly toy-like, the way a greetings card can be.

What the picture shows

The ground is deep graphite grey, and everything pale glows all the brighter against it. The birds face each other beak to beak; their bodies are worked in gold and bronze beads with a fine pattern across the wings. The branch and the thin curling tendrils are laid in silver. Below, about fifteen hearts of different sizes hang on threads — turquoise, pink, raspberry, gold, green and silver, each with its own inner pattern of rings, spirals and dots. Smaller hearts are scattered above as well, around the birds: some filled solid, some left as a thin outline, so the top of the picture reads lighter than the bottom. The grey ground stays as print on the canvas while beadwork covers the birds, the branch, the threads and the hearts — it is the contrast between matte ground and glossy glass that holds the picture together.
