Description

“Blooming earth” is the outline of Ukraine laid out in flowers: the northern part blue, the southern part gold. The mood is light and warm rather than solemn — this map grows like a flower bed.

What the picture shows

The silhouette of the country is filled with an unbroken carpet of blooms. The upper half rests on a blue watercolour patch: cornflowers, blue roses, chicory, bellflowers and iris worked in shades from inky ultramarine to pale sky. The lower half is yellow: sunflowers with black hearts, marigolds, lilies and small star-shaped blooms in honey, ochre and orange. Blue butterflies, a dragonfly, an ochre butterfly and several bees move between the flowers — small details that bring the solid mass of blooms to life. The background is white, carrying a fine outline drawing of leaves and peonies — a blue line above, a gold one below. That line pattern stays as print on the canvas; beadwork covers only the flowers inside the outline and the insects, so the map steps forward as one dense, raised shape.
