Description

“The flag” is the Ukrainian flag assembled from flowers alone: the upper half blue, the lower half yellow, with no cloth anywhere — only blossoms. The mood stays light and summery despite the weight of the symbol.

What the picture shows

The canvas is split exactly in half. Above, on a light blue ground, grow cornflowers, blue roses, chicory, bellflowers and iris, worked in several blues from deep ultramarine to pale sky, each with a golden heart. Below, on yellow, sit sunflowers, marigolds, lilies and small star-shaped blooms in a warm range from honey to orange. The border between the halves is straight and clean, so the flowers on either side read as the two bands of the flag. Insects are scattered across the picture: blue butterflies on the dividing line and near the top, an ochre butterfly and a dragonfly, several bees above the sunflowers. Beadwork covers the flowers, foliage and insects, while the flat blue and yellow fields stay as print on the canvas.
