Description

“Poppy flower” is a narrow vertical panel with a cascade of red poppies falling from top to bottom. The mood of a summer field, carried into a tall, slim picture format.

What the picture shows

Three large blooms with crumpled petals open at the top, two smaller ones sit below, and buds sway on thin curving stems along the edges. The petals run from dark cherry and burgundy in the depths to bright red and pink in the light, and the hearts are black with fine pale dots of stamens. Stems and narrow leaves are laid in thin lines of green beads that sweep in long arcs almost to the bottom of the canvas. The background is a cool wash of grey-blue and white with vertical runs of paint, and it stays as print on the canvas. Beadwork covers only the flowers, buds and stems, which is why the reds read so sharply against the pale ground.
