Description

“Fragile lilies” is a narrow vertical panel with a bouquet of white lilies on a soft, blurred ground. The mood is cool morning light: the flowers nearly merge with the background and hold their place through the sheen of the glass alone.

What the picture shows

Two large blooms open one above the other, with several elongated buds beside them still taking shape. The petals are worked in white, cream and silvery pearl beads, while the hearts are lit with yellowish and pale gold, so a warm patch appears at the centre of each flower. The long narrow leaves and stems are laid in greens, from fresh grass to almost grey near the edges. The background is a watercolour wash of grey, lilac and white with thin vertical runs, as if the paint had been left to drip. It stays as print on the canvas: beadwork covers only the flowers, buds and leaves, which is why the bouquet steps forward from the matte ground.
