Description

“Romantic evening” shows two people in a boat on dark water, with dozens of paper lanterns rising above them. The mood is a quiet celebration for two, when dusk has settled and the lights are only just catching.

What the picture shows

The couple is stitched in black beads against a large golden disc — the only warm patch at the centre of the picture. The boat is dark with a glinting side, and the water below is scattered with lantern reflections: yellow, amber and cream squares spread across a violet and lilac surface. Above the scene opens a wide mandala fan of silver and pearly white curls, filling the whole upper half of the canvas and built symmetrically from the centre. Smaller lanterns drift through the lilac sky as separate points of light, spread unevenly, as if they had just been released from the shore. The whole palette rests on ten colours, so the piece works through light against dark rather than through variety. Beadwork covers the mandala, the silhouettes, the boat and the lights, while the blurred evening sky with its lilac and aubergine shifts stays as print on the canvas.
