Description

“Blooming magnolia” is a branch of pink magnolia crossing a large pale disc that reads like a low moon. The mood is a quiet spring evening: the petals have already started to fall and drift slowly downwards.

What the picture shows

At the centre is a light oval of sky with soft shifts of blue, lilac and lemon yellow, and across it spreads a branch carrying two dozen buds and open blooms. The petals run from deep raspberry pink at the base to almost white at the tips, and the branch is worked in brown and bronze beads. A fine black lace of curls with silvery flecks frames the oval. The side panels are darker and denser: a pattern of muted burgundy and grey-brown flowers, with turquoise stems below that look like sea grass. A few petals float free against the light ground, and it is these that set the whole composition moving — the eye follows them from top to bottom. Beadwork covers the flowers, the branch, the lacework and the side panels, while the soft watercolour sky inside the oval stays as print on the canvas.
