Description

“Lemons” is a sunlit branch carrying six ripe lemons, resting on two deep blue dishes among lavish cobalt scrollwork. The mood is a Mediterranean kitchen: warm yellow against cool blue, all of it on a cream ground covered with old handwriting.

What the picture shows

The whole composition runs on two colours. The fruit is worked from honey yellow to an almost white highlight on one side, so the lemons look round and heavy; the foliage is laid in several greens, from dark emerald to pale lime. Small white and pink citrus blossoms open between the leaves. The dishes and the sprawling floral ornament along the edges are beaded in blues of different depth, from inky ultramarine to light sky blue in the hearts of the curls. The pale cream background with its faint floral pattern and lines of handwriting stays as print on the canvas — beadwork covers the fruit, the leaves and the blue ornament, and that is exactly why they glow against the matte ground.
