Description

“Pastel bouquet” shows large roses and tulips in a clear glass vase, gathered in a pastel range of blue and cream. A calm still life on a nearly square canvas.

What the picture shows

The bouquet holds several open roses with curled petals, a few tulips with pointed tips, small blue florets and buds on long stems. The petals run from white and pearl into pale blue, deep blue and warm beige-gold, so every flower keeps its own shade. Leaves and stems are stitched in green and emerald beads with a turquoise sheen in places. The vase is rendered in vertical lines of pale beads, with the stems and water visible through it. The blue-grey background with its vertical runs of paint stays as print on the canvas, and against that cool ground the densely beaded bouquet looks especially full. The flowers turn in different directions and overlap, so the bouquet has depth instead of looking flat. The palest roses gather at the centre while the deeper blues move out to the edges.
