Description

“Air flowers” shows dandelion clocks on a grey textured ground. A simple, strongly graphic piece: only silhouettes, stems and air.

What the picture shows

About a dozen seed heads of different sizes are gathered on the canvas. Some are worked in white, silver and pale blue beads, with rays spreading from the centre and ending in tiny seeds, so the spheres look transparent. Others are stitched in solid black and act as contrasting silhouettes: several dense heads along the bottom and a few closed buds on thin stalks. The stems run vertically through the full height and are black as well, with barely visible thickenings. The background is grey, with lighter and darker washes and white splashes of paint, and it stays as print on the canvas. The whole picture plays on three tones — black, white and pale blue — and on glass shine against a matte surface.
