Description

“Flower chime” is a generous bouquet of blue irises and white blooms on a grey-olive ground. A horizontal piece with a soft watercolour mood.

What the picture shows

The bouquet fills nearly the whole canvas. Large white and cream flowers with orange centres glow in the middle, and blue and violet irises open around them with their characteristic wavy petals. Golden brown grasses and dry stems rise between the flowers, and at the bottom the bouquet seems to run downwards in thin beaded lines, like drops continuing the stems. The palette is restrained: blue, white, cream, ochre and a little lilac. The background is pale and greyish green with blurred patches of paint; it stays as print on the canvas, so the densely beaded flowers step forward and look almost in relief. The blooms are stitched in long rows that follow the shape of each petal, so every flower has its own direction of shine. The bouquet is wide and a little scattered, as if it had just been laid on a table rather than put in a vase.
