Description

“Jungle Song” shows an ornamental elephant against bright tropical foliage. The piece lives on the contrast between the pale patterned animal and the blazing green and yellow ground.

What the picture shows

The elephant stands facing the viewer with its ears spread wide, and its whole silhouette is beaded in white, pearl and silver shading into green across the ears and forehead. Inside, the shape is divided into small ornamental fields: concentric arcs, dots, leaf-shaped motifs and thin lines that follow the folds of the skin. The trunk hangs down, also covered in rows of beads, and the tusks are short and pale. The background is printed: a mottled weave of tropical leaves in lemon yellow, grass green, dark green and red, with spreading patches of paint. Beads go only on the animal, which is why the pale elephant still reads clearly against such a saturated ground. The pattern lightens towards the edges of the ears and darkens towards the centre, and that alone gives the elephant volume without a single shadow.
