Description

“Savannah Pride” is a lion's head built entirely out of ornament. Instead of a realistic portrait there is a decorative pattern in which the bearing of the animal is still unmistakable.

What the picture shows

The mane radiates from the muzzle in sharp feathered locks, each one worked in white, pearl and silver-grey beads with fine patterning inside. The forehead, the bridge of the nose and the cheeks are covered in turquoise-blue scrolls, as if painted on; the amber eyes with their dark rims are what hold your gaze. Silver picks out the nose and the chin, and a long ornamental wedge of mane hangs below them. The background is brown sepia washes and splatters, like coffee on paper; it stays as print on the canvas, so the pale lion steps forward and looks almost three-dimensional. The large Preciosa No. 6 beads add texture to the mane, and the microbeads do the work wherever the pattern is finest. The muzzle takes up nearly the full width of the canvas and the mane runs past the edges, so the portrait reads as a close-up.
