Description

“Red emerald” is a bouquet of crimson tulips in a clear glass vase. A still life with a wintry mood: hot colour against a cold silvery ground.

What the picture shows

The blooms open at different heights: some face the viewer, some turn away, and one tight bud holds to the side. The petals run from deep crimson and cherry into a lighter pink with dark hearts, which gives the bouquet real volume. Long curving leaves and thin stems are stitched in silver-white and pearl beads; they almost merge with the background and keep the composition light. The vase is rendered in vertical lines of pale beads, with the stems visible through it. Small dark and silver beads are scattered over the white snowy ground like chips of ice, while the ground itself stays as print on the canvas. The bouquet is loosely gathered, with a few stems sticking out to the side, so it looks freshly put in water rather than arranged by a florist. The flowers rise higher on the right, which makes the composition slightly asymmetric.
