Description

“One second ‘before’” shows a black kitten in a red Santa hat reaching a paw towards a golden star hanging above it. The name is about the instant before the ornament comes down.

What the picture shows

The cat sits just right of centre with its tail curled up behind it, worked in black beads with a fine sparkle, yellow eyes, a red collar with a bell and a white trim on the hat. Above it hangs a dense curtain of Christmas ornaments: gold stars and snowflakes, openwork baubles, long amber icicles, silver and pale blue snowflakes, strings of beads and sequins. They lie almost solid at the top and thin out downwards, so the lower part of the canvas stays clean and white with only a thin floor line across it. That emptiness is what gives the picture air, while the glass and the bugle beads gather all the light in the upper half. There are 34 bead colours here, and almost all of them go into the ornaments rather than the cat itself.
