Description

“By the fireplace” shows a festive hearth with a live fire, garlands and stockings. A homely winter scene gathered into a narrow vertical canvas.

What the picture shows

An arched opening sits at the centre with a bright fire inside: the flame is worked in yellow, orange and white beads, with dark logs and a wrought-iron grate beneath it. The stone wall around it is warmly lit and stays as print on the canvas. A garland of green needles with red bows and small yellow and red berries wraps the mantel and the lower ledge. A wreath with matching bows hangs above the fireplace, candles stand on the left of the shelf and a bowl of apples and a pear on the right. Two striped stockings hang from the mantel, one red and white, the other green and white. The beading is densest on the garlands, the fire and the stockings, so those are the parts that glow against the muted grey wall. The green needles of the garlands are worked in two shades, so they look thick even on a small canvas.
