Description

“Moon filigree” is a large circle on a black ground filled with golden lacework. The piece is purely decorative, with no subject in the usual sense.

What the picture shows

The disc takes up almost the whole canvas. Inside it sits a dense weave of small scrolls, spirals, fans and star-shaped blossoms worked in gold, bronze and pearl-white beads. A few motifs are deliberately picked out in lighter tones: a white star flower with long rays opens on the right, and a smaller motif glows beside it. The black ground shows through between the beaded lines and becomes part of the pattern — it is the empty spaces that make the drawing look like filigree or carved lace. There is no printed scenery here at all: everything rests on the contrast between warm metallic shine and deep matte black. Towards the rim the beads sit more sparsely than in the centre, so the circle keeps a soft edge instead of looking cut out with scissors. A few small black patches inside are left as the holes of the lace.
