Description

“Autumn” is an autumn bouquet of physalis, berries and rose hips set against an old European street. The composition holds a still life and a townscape at once.

What the picture shows

An armful of autumn lies in the centre: orange physalis lanterns, dark blue almost black berries with a glossy sheen, long red rose hips and large lilac-pink leaves with clear veining. The bouquet is beaded densely, running from orange into red and from pink into violet. Behind it a watercolour street opens up with tiled roofs, sharp spires and a wrought-iron lamp on a bracket; it is enclosed in a beaded border and stays mostly as print, with only the outlines and the lamp picked out in dark beads. The warm ochre-rust margin around it is printed as well, so all the shine is gathered in the central bouquet. The darkest berries are deliberately set next to the brightest lanterns, and it is those pairings that give the bouquet its depth.
