Description

“Ball of flowers” shows three large honey-amber tulips on a light textured ground. A narrow vertical piece, closer to a panel than to a picture.

What the picture shows

The blooms open at different heights: the top bud is still closed, the middle one has turned aside, and the lowest faces the viewer. The petals are stitched in rows of amber, gold and terracotta beads with darker veins, so each petal has its own volume and a clear shine. Stems and long curving leaves are laid in thin lines of grey-green and silver beads. Down at the base a spray of small willow catkins is scattered across the canvas in silver-white and golden beads on slender twigs. The background imitates pale cracked plaster with a cool grey underpainting; it stays as print on the canvas, and against that matte surface the warm flowers look especially bright. The composition is asymmetric: the flowers sit high and the lower third of the canvas stays almost empty, which gives the piece plenty of air.
