Description

“Winter date” shows a couple under one umbrella walking down a snowy alley strung with lights. Warm evening light on cold snow is the whole mood of the piece.

What the picture shows

The alley pulls the eye into the distance: bare trees stand on both sides wrapped in strings of golden bulbs, lit windows glow behind them, and a spired tower closes the perspective. A street lamp burns on the left with a warm yellow globe, and wrought-iron railings with planters of blue-green foliage run along the path. The two figures in the centre are dark and almost graphic, and they are what pulls the composition together. The snow is worked in lilac-grey, pale blue and pearl beads, with ochre and gold reflections scattered over the wet path. The sky and the farthest plane stay as print on the canvas, so the beaded lights shine brighter than anything else. The branches close overhead like a vault, and the warm bulbs run in an unbroken line all the way to the tower, which is what sets the depth of the perspective.
