Description

“Ginkgo biloba” is a scatter of fan-shaped ginkgo leaves spread across almost the whole canvas. It is a calm, decorative piece built entirely on gold, mother-of-pearl and smoky grey.

What the picture shows

More than a dozen leaves of different sizes lie one over another, as if they had just been gathered and laid out on a table. Every leaf is stitched in rays running from the stalk to the wavy edge, so the beads repeat the natural veining and the fans look rounded and springy. The palette is warm and cool at once: dense gold and amber along the edges, milky pearl and silvery blue in the centres, with a greenish sheen here and there. The thin curved twigs that hold the leaves are worked in small gold beads. The grey ground with its blurred darker clouds and the drawn outlines of a few more leaves stay as print on the canvas — beadwork covers only the fans, which is why they glow against the matte smoky background.
