Description

“Delicate poppies” shows pink poppies on a blurred watercolour ground. The work is soft and spring-like, with no harsh contrasts.

What the picture shows

The background is painted in broad strokes of green, lilac, blue and yellow, and it stays as print on the canvas — the beadwork covers only the flowers. The largest poppy opens at the centre: wide pale pink petals with finer veining, a dark heart of black stamens and a green seed capsule. Another bloom leans in above it, almost white with a pink rim; a smaller poppy shows in profile on the right, and a third opens at the lower right with a lilac cast. Between them, long buds in green down sway on curving stems, some already splitting to show the pink tissue of the petals. Nineteen bead colours carry the shift from near white to crimson inside a single petal, which is what makes the flowers look half translucent. The stamens at the centres are worked in the finest beads, so the heart comes out dark and dense against the pale petals. The leaves and stems are stitched in several greens, from olive to almost turquoise.
