Description

“Mandala feather” is a round mandala with a black feather at its centre on a bright watercolour ground. The work is decorative and high-contrast, in a boho key.

What the picture shows

The background is painted in broad strokes of turquoise, magenta, violet and white, with spatters of paint across the whole canvas. A round disc lies at the centre, worked in silvery grey and white beads, its rim made of short transverse stitches like a woven hoop. Inside the disc is a large black feather with a finely drawn shaft and barbs, and a smaller one beside it. Black lace ornaments with long curling tendrils sit in the upper right and lower left corners, with magenta petals opening among them. Thin white scrolls and small leaves wind around the mandala. Nine bead colours are enough, because the real work is done by the contrast of black, white and one saturated magenta over a coloured ground that stays as print. The brush strokes on the background read freely because no beads cover them: the stitching runs only over the mandala, the feather and the corner ornaments. Small white dots are scattered across the whole field and pick up the paint spatters.
