Description

“Welcoming autumn” is an autumn bouquet of sunflowers and maple leaves with the word Welcome written across it in white. The work is warm and hospitable, made in the spirit of a house sign.

What the picture shows

The background is dark grey, so the whole colour range sounds especially loud against it. Sunflowers take up the most space: yellow and ochre petals with densely filled brown hearts. Purple, orange and terracotta gerberas open beside them, along with small flowers and buds. Maple leaves lie on the left and along the bottom — red, crimson, russet and yellow, with clearly drawn veins. A cluster of red rowan berries hangs at the upper left, and acorns rest in two corners. Across the middle of the canvas runs the word Welcome, stitched in white beads in a round handwritten script. Twenty-two bead colours are needed for the leaves and petals, which carry yellow, carrot orange and deep wine red alike. The word lies over the flowers and leaves, slightly overlapping them, so it looks as though it were chalked on top. The background stays as print on the canvas — beadwork covers only the bouquet and the lettering.
