Description

“Colored tigers” shows a tigress with her cub, painted in every colour at once, against a starry sky. The work is bright and very dense: almost eighteen thousand beads.

What the picture shows

The adult tiger's face takes up the upper two thirds of the canvas. Its stripes are black, but everything between them is broken into patches of colour — pink, orange, yellow, lime, turquoise and violet flowing into one another without hard edges. The eyes are pale blue, the nose pink, the long white whiskers drawn in separate stitches. At the lower left the cub nestles in, worked just as brightly, its muzzle lifted and its eyes half closed — together they make a scene of calm rather than menace. The background is dark blue with a greyish haze and a scatter of tiny white stars, like the night sky. Twenty-eight bead colours are needed for the fur itself: every stripe is filled with several neighbouring shades, so the colour never looks flat.
