Description

“Bee in clover” shows a large bee beneath clover blooms on a dark ground, framed by gold ornament. The work is graphic and disciplined, almost a botanical plate.

What the picture shows

The bee sits exactly in the middle: a striped black and gold body, finely stitched legs and antennae, and wings that stay translucent, filled with dark turquoise and marked by clear dark veins. Above it and to either side, four clover heads open in pale lilac and near white, built from fine beads so they come out soft and rounded. The stems and the curved gold arcs beneath the flowers keep the composition symmetrical. In each of the four corners lies a gold ornament of scrolls, rosettes and fine lines that recall mehndi. The dark grey-brown background stays as print — beadwork covers only the bee, the flowers and the patterns, so they stand clearly above it. Nine bead colours supply the black, the gold, the turquoise and the whole range of lilac.
